Music Monday- And 30 Years Ago

On this Music Monday, we are just looking at some of the popular songs of 1989. I binged watch a series on the National Geographic channel documenting that year and it got me thinking about the songs of that year:

I have to include this song. During the summer of 1989, I was a DJ for a local college station. They had a summer camp for kids for two weeks. I was hired (I think a $4.00/hr) to run the board as the these little 8-10 year kids got to play their favorite songs. All of the little buggers chose this song, so I had to hear this song once an hour for eight hours a day for two week (Basically 80 times in two weeks, kind of explains why I decided to head to Naval Boot Camp about seven months later-lol):

Hope everyone has a wonderful Monday.

  2. Patrick,

Good-morning, my friend! I apologize for not stopping by to dance with you yesterday but I had two appointments which kept me tied up all afternoon, then by the time I got home a zillion things to do. Anywho, 30-years ago...mewsic escapes my min. Our oldest turned a year old that June. We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. DH was facing the possibility of a job layoff which didn't happen but instead they transferred him to one of the sites for 6-months at a stretch keeping him away from home through the week. By the fall of the same year, I learned we were expecting our second child, little did we know DD#2. It was such a crazy year, so mewsic just did pop up on my radar it seems. The only song in your mix that I know is 'Look Away' and I think the only reason that is because Chicago is our DH's favorite band. Your story that you shared about Prince's 'Batdance' made me smile. It sounds like the Armed Services has been going about recruitment all wrong. They need to hire young school aged kids to pursuade young men/women to enlist. I'll give Prince this, he sure knew how to pick out the chicks for his mewsic vid. Thanks for being a part of the greatest blog party on the cyberblock. Have a boogietastic week, my friend!

  3. It's amazing how quickly 30 years go by! ☺ Oh darn, the Jeff Healey video is not available in Canada (I'm a huge fan!) That Prince video is so much fun. Thanks for bringing back some memories.

  5. Hi Patrick! It's good to be back hanging with you all. Wow, 30 years! How I wish I could turn back time and go back there...
I wasn't familiar with your first song, or the band for that matter. While the song was playing I looked them up on Wikipedia and I can see why they were such a good band with all that talent from Journey and The Babys. (Thought I'd share this tidbit I read while I was there, about how the band got their name, in case you didn't already know. It's pretty cool, I think:
The members decided on a name for the band while playing pool. John Waite missed a shot and Jonathan Cain made a comment on how bad his "english" was (referring to the spin a player puts on the cue ball) and the band decided to use the phrase. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_English)

Loved hearing Tone Loc's "Wild Thing" again. And I love his "Funky Gold Medina" song too. That's some fun stuff there, both of those.

Another one I hadn't heard in a long time, Howard Jones. I forgot about his "Everlasting Love." My favorite by him is "Things Can Only Get Better" -- reminds me of my years in DC.

Funny story about those kids and their favorite song being Prince's "Batdance" and you having to hear that song every hour! And it's a LONG song! OMG, that would've driven me to the Navy too! haha

Great post. Thanks for the trip down memory lane...
    Have a good weekend,

  6. Oh, anything from the 80's has to be good and this doesn't disappoint. I didn't know the story of Bad English (thank you, Michelle). Was surprised to discover that my husband was quite familiar with Wild Thing (it's not his kind of music) because they play it on Sirius XM's Lithium. I like a number of Howard Jones songs but...that Prince song and video. Wow. Once or twice would be OK - after that, I might enlist somewhere, too. The only negative - Chicago - I love their earlier stuff to pieces - the later stuff, like 1989, not so much. Have a great week!
