Living in California and going to school here, you learn about the California Missions that the Spanish set up in the late 18th century. Mision San Francisco de Asis was the sixth to be established under the direction of Father Junipero Serra. Five days before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Father Francisco Palou celebrated the first Mass under a makeshift shelter and the City of Saint Francis had its official beginning on June 29, 1776:
