St.Boniface Church is located in one of the roughest parts of San Francisco-The Tenderloin. To me, it defines the word "church". As the sign says above, it allows the homeless to sleep in pews in the back 3/4th of the church during the hours above. They do have a noontime mass in the front 1/4 of the church. There are rules like no loud music, no drug using, no smoking, no drinking, etc and the homeless observe them. I wasn't allowed to take a lot of pictures (because they didn't want me taking pictures of people, totally understandable) but it is a such beautiful church that I was happy to get the few I did:
To me, this what a church should be about. It is inspiring to say the least and it is truly faith in action.

ReplyDeleteLovely photos! What a cute church, so small but has all the features of a cathedral. That's neat that the homeless are welcome to sleep there. The church in Cape Town where we bought coffee and cake/croissants reaches out to the homeless too (the Central Methodist Mission). They have an edible garden in crates outside where you can help yourself and some homeless people were resting their feet and drinking coffee inside near us. They got theirs for free. ;)
