I went up to the Latter Day Saints (LDS) Temple in the Oakland Hills. The Oakland LDS Temple was 15th constructed and 13th operating temple of Church of Latter Day Saints when it was dedciated in 1964. I wasn't allowed inside the actual Temple because I am not a Latter Day Saint but I was allowed inside the vistor center (which I learned a lot about the Latter Day Saints) and genealogy center (which I will be going back to) and I was able to walk the beautiful grounds:

Someone who did the A to Z challenge this past year chose as his theme the LDS temples around the world. It was interesting to see them; I had a friend who was Mormon and he used to talk about the parts of the temple that weren't open to the general public. Interesting faith...

ReplyDeleteI actually asked that question and you need to talk to your local Bishop and make sure that you are living up to the Latter Day Saints standards to go into the temple.

ReplyDeleteThat's a pretty stupendous building and grounds. I often wonder why churches need to build such large edifices and whether the money could be spent helping the poor or making a difference in the world?

Fascinating post, Patrick! I have never visited an LDS Temple, but I do understand that they keep some of the best genealogy records. I have a friend who specializes in genealogy and she uses her limited non-LDS access quite frequently for her research.
