Just a walk through Downtown Placerville. Placerville is a small town of about 11.000 that is about 45 minutes north of Sacramento. About 150 years ago it was a booning mining town and got a nickname called "Hangtown" because of the numerous hangings that went on there. It is a cute and nice Main Street to walk around with many of the original buildings from yesteryear still standing:
And there is the Cary House Hotel which was built in 1857 (below)
And the inside is cool:
11,000? As Ghost Town Grover would say, "that ain't a small town, that right there is a bona-fidey metropolis!"
ReplyDeleteI live in Grover. It's a literal ghost town, but there are 154 living people, currently including me.
I love finding out about interesting places, and Placerville certainly fills the bill! Thank you for sharing. :-)
We almost came to Placerville on our RV trip this week. We wanted to stay at the fairgrounds, but they don't take reservations and we were afraid after driving all the way there we would have to turn around and go back down into the valley to find a play to stay overnight. - Margy

I've been to Placerville, but didn't do much more than go to work (El Dorado County has its offices there) and the hotel. Now I wish I had done more looking around.

When I saw the title of your thumbnail Placerville, I had to visit you, to see if there were several Placervilles, but no, this is the one, about an hour from where I live, and now I have seen these fun views, I really need to visit!! Thank you for giving me inspiration:)

ReplyDeleteOh wow, the inside of that place is awesome. The outside is just as cool if not moreso. So is the hotel haunted? Did you spend the night there and would you if it was haunted? hehehehe Well, I gotta get up early. It's the hubby now that needs a test. Later my friend, and great job.

ReplyDeletePlacerville looks like a cool little town. I went through there on US 50 en route to the Eastern Sierra (Mono Lake et al.), but didn't have much time to stop.
ReplyDeleteYou captured a nice feel for the place which seems like it's full of history and humor. I suppose the people who got hanged didn't find it so funny. What's inside the Hangman's Tree, rope, lumber? And who or what is in the window? A whole building for public toilets, I suppose it goes with the soda works, especially if the soda is caffeinated.

This was fun to read...we’ve somehow missed spending time in Placerville on our trips to California..will have to try to remedy that next time! I enjoy unique small towns with some history!
