The Tale of Two Minor League Parks

This is a tale of two minor-league Single-A ballparks- San Jose Giants - Excite Ballpark and the Modesto Nuts  -John Thurman Field. One good tale and one sad tale:

On the good side, Excite Ballpark is the home of the San Jose Giants.  It was built in in the early 40's as a WPA project and one of the first ballparks to be built entirely of reinforced concrete.

This was the giveaway

One of the cool things about Excite Ballpark is Turkey Mike's BBQ, down the the third base line:

One of really cool things that the ballpark has is Olimpos Churros which is owned and ran by Hipolito Cerda for the last 45 years:

The sad tale is John Thurman Field, the home of the Modesto Nuts. John Thurman was built in 1955 but sadly as of the end of the 2024, the Nuts will be moving as Modesto decided not to come up with the $32 million that MLB for improvments:

It is sad that John Thurman is closing as it is a fun place to watch a game.

  1. So, what will happen to the Nuts? Relocate or disband? That is a shame...

    1. I just read that the city and the Mariners are in talks about keeping the team there.

  2. I don't know why this sport isn't more popular here. I don't even think NZ has a national team. It's more about rugby here.
