Five Pretty But Not Nice Plants

While at Springs Preserve in Las Vegas, they had an exhibit about plants that look nice but can be deadly:

A Shrinking Iris (above) can be deadly to cats and dogs.

Pitch pine produces a highly flammable resin and is poisonous to cattle and sheep.

White Snakeroot contains the powerful toxic alcohol tremetol. When consumed by cattle, sheep, horses and goats, their meat and milk become poisonous. When the meat or milk is consumed by humans this "milk sickness" will likely be deadly to both the human and the animal.

Teddy Bear Cholla are not poisonous but their thorny pieces will detach at the slightest touch and are hard to get out of the skin.

The Sago Palm is rated the ASPCA as the most poisonous plant pets will encounter. It is full of neurotoxins and only one in four pets survive after having a bite. It is also harmful to humans.

  1. This reminds me of some of the beautiful tree frogs from Panama. Great to look at but highly poisonous.
