A hundred and ten years ago, the Niles section of Fremont was what is Hollywood is today. The Essanay Film Company brought their star Charlie Chaplin out to make movies. Chaplin hated Niles as it was very rural at the time. Chaplin shot some movies including one of his most famous- The Tramp, but after three months he left Niles for Los Angeles.
Chaplin might have hated Niles, but over a 100 years later Niles still loves Charlie Chaplin and they host Charlie Chaplin days:

It’s wonderful to see Niles celebrating its unique place in film history with such affection—Charlie Chaplin may have moved on quickly, but his legacy clearly found a lasting home there.
