Just Walking In The City of Angels

Just some pics of when I was walking around Los Angeles. Just took some pics of things I found interesting:

The Petroleum Building-built in 1925

One of the cool things was that I spent a little more time at the Staples Center and saw a couple of more statues. The first two honor the Los Angeles Kings (hockey):

And they dedicated one to the great Shaquille O'Neal (It is one of the greatest statues I have ever seen dedicated to a sports figure):

Sometimes if we just walk around a place, you will see all kinds of cool things:

Music Monday: Songs That Begin With the Letter P

Music Monday: I asked to find songs that began with the the first letter of my first name. Since my name is Patrick, the letter is P.

Hope you enjoyed some songs that start with the letter P.

Phoebe Hearst Museum of Anthropology

I got the chance to visit the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology on the campus of the University of California the other day and it was filled with a lot of great artifacts that tells us who we are:

19th century Kwakiutl House Post
Silk Dragon Robe - Qing Dynasty-China
Pot -Southern Peru- 100BC-800 AD
Wine Cup-Greece 525 BC-50 BC
Obsidian Arrowheads-early 20th century. These arrowheads were made by "Ishi"-He was the last known member of the Yahi Tribe in California

Marble panels from the Guandi Temple in China carved during the reign of the Emperor Qianiang (1735-1796)
Vessel-Peru 100 BC-800 AD
And the star of the Hearst Museum:

Sarcophagus lid of Psamtik I. The first of the three kings of the 26th Dynasty of Egypt-600 BC
The Phoebe Hearst Museum is a must see if you are ever on the Cal campus. I was glad to finally get a chance to enjoy it.

The Lone Sailor Memorial

I was at Vista Point at the end of the Marin side of the Golden Gate Bridge and came upon the "The Lone Sailor" Monument- the plaque on it reads:

The Lone Sailor

This is a memorial to everyone who ever sailed out the Golden Gate in the service of their Country – in the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Coast Guard, the Merchant Marine.

A ship heading for sea passes directly by this spot at the northern end of the Golden Gate. Here the Sailor feels the first long roll of the sea, the beginning of the endless horizon that leads to the far Pacific.

There is one last chance to look back at the city of San Francisco, shining on its hills, one last chance to look back at the coastline of the United States, one last chance to look back at home.

Thousands and thousands of American seafarers have sailed past this place, in peace and war, to defend this Country and its sea frontiers. Many of them never returned. This monument is dedicated to the ordinary Sailors and Marines who sailed from this place and did their duty.

This memorial is one of 14 across the country that copies the original which is at the United States Navy Memorial  in Washington D.C.:

It is a great tribute to the all the sea services that have come in and out of the San Francisco Bay.

Angel Island 2017

Took my annual kayaking trip to Angel Island State Park in the San Francisco Bay. I would love to share pics while I was kayaking but my phone is always put away while I am paddling. We always come ashore on the old U.S. Army side of the Island:

Civil War era cannon
The Commanding Officer's House
The Army hospital built in 1904
We decided to take a hike and head to Pearls Beach, which I had never been to and it was totally amazing and beautiful:

I took one picture of both the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco from above Pearls Beach and from the beach itself (The first picture is above the beach and the second one is from the beach). I love the layer of fog:

Hopefully next year if I go to Angel Island via kayak, I can explore and share a new place on the island.

Music Monday: The Walking Mix
