I was in Monterey and decided to head down and take a little tour of Cannery Row which is the waterfront tourist section of Monterey. Cannery Row used to be home to the sardine canneries which dominated the area. John Steinbeck's novel Cannery Row described the area as "a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream." The last cannery closed in 1973 and it has become a tourist mecca of shops, hotels and restaurants in the old cannery buildings:
And there are a couple of public statues, the first pays homage to the color characters of Cannery Row. It is called The Cannery Row Monument:
This statue honors The Queen of Cannery Row: Kalisa Moore and her café. As Cannery Row was being reborn, Kalisa became a major factor in retaining memories of Steinbecks's era, promoting tourism and commerce as the President of the Cannery Row Foundation:
And finally the man himself:

What an interesting walk.

ReplyDeleteElvis is not dead! I knew it!
ReplyDeleteSome of that reminds me of English seaside sightings! cheers
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool little area. Didn't know anything about it before now!
ReplyDeleteThis takes me back to when I was 20 years old, Patrick! And I won't say how long ago that was, but it was quite a while back! I went there with a three other friends, also visiting nearby Carmel. While in Carmel we went to Boar's Head restaurant were on the look out for Clint Eastwood, but he never showed! The nerve! ha! Thanks for these great photos, my friend! Makes me want to come back to that quaint and interesting spot (or two).
ReplyDeleteI like the Rock Star. Ha!
ReplyDeleteFantastic! I'm luvin' it and you go to the coolest places! We have a couple of places in town, but nothing like this. This is so cool! I can't tell you my favorite place is cuz they all are. Hubby would love the big Hot Sauce place for sure... and the Rock Star... nah... you see something like that all the time, but the caboose one we have something like that in town. It's too cool and we have a Windmill one too where you can look inside on certain days. Cool, huh? Anyway thanks for sharing my friend! You're duh best! HUGS
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this area with us Patrick and for linking up at #overthemoon. I love all the photos.
ReplyDeleteI never knew this should be on my "bucket list" but now - thanks to you - it is!
ReplyDeleteit looks nice! Love that hot pepper sauce and all the statues..
ReplyDeleteAfter hearing about Cannery Row after all these years, now I know what it's all about. Very cool place to hang out! Thank you for sharing with us at Celebrate Your Story, and have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteI love these little tourist spots. I'm glad they removed the stink.
ReplyDeletePatrick,
ReplyDeleteLooks like a lovely place to spend the day! I like how city's choose to revitalize historical buildings to promote regrowth in a particular area. Knoxville has done a lot downtown to make it more appealing for folks to incorporate dining out and movie going and other activities. We rarely go downtown but we hope to stroll through the streets of the most historical part of the city this fall. Have a good day and thanks for sharing!
Looks like such an interesting place to visit Patrick
ReplyDeleteI have not read Cannery Row, it would be great to read the book and then go see the area. I have been able to tour a couple of Canada's historic cannery sites and they are so interesting. The story makes me a bit sad though.
