National Shrine of St.Francis of Assisi

I was in the North Beach area of San Francisco and visited the Naitonal Shrine of St.Francis of Assisi. The church was established in 1849 and the city of San Francisco and the State of California were both incorpated in 1850, so the church predates both the city and the state. The current church was built in 1919. The church is no longer a parish but in 1999, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops granted the church the title of National Shrine of St.Francis of Assisi:

The National Shrine of St.Francis of Assisi is a beautiful place and one of those places in San Francisco that is hidden but worth going to.

  7. What a gorgeous church - Catholics always do stained glass and murals so well don't they? I hadn't thought of St Francis and San Francisco being related but it has a nice connection with the names.
Thanks for linking up with us at MLSTL and I've shared on my SM :)

  12. These are some beautiful sculptures and depictions. Truly diverse, as though seen from the eyes of different artists over different eras

  17. Sorry I'm so late, but I'm here and that's all that's all that counts right? Anyway, this church reminds me of a church I went to when I was little and in fact I was baptized in this church called, "All Saints", in Chicago. It was a place called, "Bridgeport" in Chicago. They also call that area, "Little Italy". It was Mayor Daley's neighborhood. Well, I think I was about 10 when they decided to put an expressway through our neighborhood & we had to move. It was called I55 and many houses were torn down, but the expressway which was across the street from our church, so for some reason they wanted the church torn down, but when you tear down a church you have to get permission from the Pope. I was also surprised that he allowed it because of its beauty. It looked like a cathedral to me. So, that's our history lesson for today. Thanks for sharing with me also. It was kind of like going back in time for me. Thank you so much for sharing. Have a great weekend!
