The International Test Garden in Portland was founded as a safe haven during World War I for hybrid roses in Europe. It now houses one the world's largest collection of roses and is a beautiful place to walk:

How beautiful. The one time I visited Portland, it was in February. Primroses were in bloom. Needless to say, no roses.
