A Peek At Downtown Hayward

I have lived in Hayward, Ca for most of my life. I was "Made In Hayward"  as I went from K through my B.A. in the city. Hayward says it is the "Heart of the Bay" (some old-timers call it the liver) as it is in the middle if you were driving from San Jose to San Francisco. It was a working-class town when I was growing up. It thinks that it more upscale now as it is attracting more and more "techies" but it still has the gritty feel to it:

Old City Hall
The current City Hall
The Fire Department Downtown.
Downtown Post Office
Hayward's Downtown is always changing the as old business's leave and new ones come in:

B St-The main drag of downtown
The Green Shutter Hotel Building-home of many businesses and one of the oldest buildings in the city
One of the many antique stores in town
Outside of another store
One of the hipper stores downtown

Buffalo Bill's is a brewery (above) and a restaurant. They are famous for beer brewed below:

And there some other downtown touches:

The Portuguese Park
Newman Park

The Children's Memorial Statue. It is dedicated to all the children who have lost their lives to violence

And murals that are sprouting up:

Hope you enjoyed a small look at the downtown area of the place I have called home for most of my life.

    1. LOL-They have cleaned up downtown big time in the last couple of years. Go right behind the new City Hall at the BART station and Hayward becomes a little seedy.

  2. Thanks for sharing! I wonder what the story is behind Portuguese Park.

    1. It was joint effort between Hayward and its sister city in Portugal to make a park that you typically see in Portugal.

      I should have explained it.

  5. Wonderful murals. I don't know much about Hayward. I lived in SF and along the coast for 15 years. All I know from Hayward is that it was a stop along BART. Thanks for making it more interesting for me.

    1. Thanks.

      The murals are new.

Hayward is about 150,000 people. It is spread out.

    1. Don't know about that.

That is better than seedy and sketchy as it was back in the day.

  13. I love old towns.... I live in a very old town. The buildings are just so interesting and full of character and everything has a deep sense of history. New and modern buildings can be beautiful of course too, but they don't have the same stories to whisper just yet. :)
