Hanging in the Sutro District

I was in the Sutro District of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco. The Sutro District was once home to the famous Sutro Baths which were built in 1894 as the world's largest indoor swimming pool. For a long while, it was a popular venue but by the 1960's it was no longer profitable and it was sold to developers to make high-rise apartments. The developers started to demolish the Baths and in 1966, there was fire that burned what was left and the city decided not pursue the apartments. The ruins have been part of the National Park Service since 1973:

Besides the ruins, there is a great view of the Pacific Ocean:

The Sutro District is a cool place to hang out in San Francisco.

  5. I had to google for pics of it's heyday. I'm quite fascinated by abandoned places and their former glory. It was at one point an ice rink! And the pools were indoors and you had 7 different temperatures to choose from! Very ambitious! https://www.nps.gov/goga/learn/historyculture/sutro-baths.htm#:~:text=Adolph%20Sutro%2C%20the%20self%2Dmade,north%20of%20the%20Cliff%20House. Thanks for sharing with #Allseasons

  7. I had never heard of the Sutro Baths, but that was an interesting story! I think a National park is better than high rise apartments...
    All the best, Traude

  17. It is interesting how the swimming pool disaster actually is now a tourist attraction. It is on such a crazy tilt that either it was constructed on a wooden foundation or it has shifted over time because of the action of water and erosion.
