Walking Around Carson City

This will be a long post as last week, I took a little time off and went to Reno for a couple of days with a side trip to Carson City which is Nevada's Captial.

I had been to Carson City years ago but never walked around. This time I put in something like 20,000 steps in walking the city (I checked my watch) in 90 + degree heat (I did have my mask and lots of water) but it was well worth it as Carson City has so many historic places in Nevada (This will not be wordless as I need to tell what the buildings are):

Carson City U.S Mint Built in 1870

The Governor's Mansion Built in 1908, restored in 1968

The Bliss Mansion, located across the street from the Governor's mansion. It was bulit in 1879, it was the largest home in Nevada. It was the first house constructed with clear lumber, square nails and piped entirely for gas lighting
The house of Louis Prang built in 1864. Prang was the father of the American Xmas Card

Sen. William Stewart's house built 1871. Stewart was one of the first two U.S. senators from Nevada

St.Peter's Episcopial Church built in 1869

First United Methodist Church built in 1857
First Presbyterian Church built in 1864. Mark Twain's brother was a chruch trustee and asked Twain to charge money for people to hear his Third Annual Message to the Third House in which "Governor Twain" and others made fun of politics and the law. Twain raised $200 and all the funds went to the church to finish it.

Olcovich-Meyers House built in 1874-1875

The Nevada State Legislature Building

The Supreme Court of Nevada

The Nevada St. Library and Archives
Almost done, This next picture so irked me. I tried for 20 minutes to get a good picture of the Nevada State Capital Building and I was so irked. One of the capital police who was walking around asked me what was wrong and I told him. He looked at my picture and said it was a good one and that it is so hard to get a good pic of the Capital Buliding because of the trees and said mine was a really good one:

And he grounds of the capital had some cool things:

Kit Carson

Abraham Curry-Considered the Founder of Carson City
Nevada State Veteran's Memorial

Nevada State Law Enforcement Memorial

In honor of miners
There is my walk of Carson City, the state capital of Nevada.

  3. This post has brought back some nice memories. I grew up in Hawthorne, Nevada; and lived in Reno for seven years. Carson City and Virginia City were always nice places to go. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit, and the photos are amazing.

  14. Carson City is a cute town. I was there in 2013 as part of a trip heading south on 395 from Reno back into California. I walked around a little bit but not as extensive as your wanderings. Thanks for sharing all your photos.

(I do have a soft spot for the modernist Supreme Court and Library/Archive buildings)

Hope you have a good and safe week!

  18. Patrick,

That sure is one fascinating walk.

I love the facades and how well maintained they are despite being so historically ancient.

Your walks are a treat to our eyes. Thanks for joining us on #WW.

  22. So many lovely buildings. I particularly like The Bliss Mansion. I've been watching a lot of US based home renovation shows and I particularly like the ones that take a home and renovate it back to its original state or time period. You have so much great architecture over there
