The Sun Gallery- Dia de los Muertos

I went over to the Sun Gallery in Hayward. The Sun Gallery has been around since 1976 and stimulates the community interests in the arts as a cultural center. It sustains local artists. They try to reflect the diversity that is Hayward in their exhibitions. I remember going there as a kid on field trips.

Right now, they are having their annual Day of the Dead  or Dia de los Muertos exhibit.  The art is done by local artists and it focuses on capturing beauty, vibrancy and celebration in memory of those who have passed on. Dia de los Muertos has its beginnings in Mexico and is celebrated many countries around the world:

  4. How interesting. We have Mexican themed kitchen. Some of this type of art is in it. My husband has some Mexican in his blood. He got excepted into an art residency for a museum here called, El Museo Latino.

  6. Fab, I’ve never got my head round this tradition but that hasn’t stopped me appreciating it if that makes sense. It seems so alien :) #MLSTL

  7. Want to know something perhaps a little strange? My mother in law is in a nursing home where we live near Binghamton, NY. The home is decorated with all kinds of Halloween imagery, including skulls, skeletons, tombstones saying "RIP" and so forth. Considering this is basically a place where people come to die, it creeps my husband out. HIs sister, visiting today from out of town, couldn't believe it, either. But, I guess I see it a diffferent way, as I do when I see this exhibit. I really enjoyed it. I have a Mexican cousin-in-law so maybe it's in my blood a little, too.

  13. Especially cool since I saw that movie Coco not too long ago, you should check it out if you haven't seen it, all about the Day of the Dead (it's animated but still very good). Fun, colorful photos and it's important to have some kind of community involvement in the arts.

  17. A bit creepy, but original. There's nothing similar in Portugal, so it's always fun to discover different things.
